Can someone explain the quantum physics-consciousness connection? In the double slit or quantum eraser experiments, the system behaves as a whole, with some apparent time independent traits. But if no one observes the particle, it exhibits the behavior of a wave that can inhabit all possibilities—including somehow passing through both holes at the same time. Electrons in atoms get angular momentum only in fixed increments (there's that quantum mechanics again, only fixed increments allowed) and for historical reasons, the first few increments are named “s,” “p,” “d,” and “f.” On the periodic the elements whose outer electrons are “s” form the two tall leftmost columns; the “p” elements are the big square on the right; the “d” elements are the big block in the middle; and the “f” elements are the two rows off at the bottom. It can dislodge the electrons in photoelectric effect. It's the first time i hear that Nagel argues against materialism/Darwinism from the premise that consciousness lacks a clear fitness-enhancing value. Thanks for this thoughtful post. Quantum physics theories, being at the core of all scientific principles, rationalise the role of matter and its relations to energy, all on a scale of atoms. In regular quantum mechanics for massive atoms at rest, the orbital angular momentum L of an electrons in an atom is quantized in units of hbar, and can be L = n*hbar, where n is an integer, n = 0, 1, 2, etc. It's time to go the whole hog and discuss how they all interact with one another. String theory's pre-history is a long story, which I'll tell another day — but it was first recognized as a possible theory of all elementary particles and forces, one that could resolve the conflict between quantum mechanics and Einstein's Are we going to start seeing announcements like this every year or two, from the latest smart boy or girl who has delusions of grandeur and a friend who writes for newspapers? But in the world of the ultra-small – atoms, electrons, even very dim light – none of the normal rules apply. (The many-worlds interpretation is similar, by the way; it is a local hidden variable explanation of quantum mechanics, but only in the “external” setting in which one regards the entire universe as a wave function. But of course, there are two possible Physics made the (wise) choice centuries ago to focus solely on external (“primary”) qualities, and no one has ever suggested clearly how to tie our enormously successful theories based on “external” qualities to the “internal” qualities of consciousness. Reality and the Extended Mind From the author: The inspiration came from many years of personal research into a range of scientific fields including consciousness and psi research, psychology, biology, cosmology, quantum physics and philosophy of mind. When particles are created as a pair—for instance, two electrons in a single atom that move or spin together—physicists call them entangled. Some of the greatest MESSING WITH THE LIGHT Quantum mechanics is the physicist's most accurate model for describing the world of the atom. Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC2T) is a world-leader in two of the most promising types of hardware for a quantum computer: photons (particles of light), and the electrons of phosphorus atoms embedded in silicon. Quantum mechanics is the branch of physics that explains the behaviour of matter and energy at the atomic scale.
